The Joys of Randomness...

Thanksgiving Day Blues Stretched Canvas Print

After yesterday's somewhat controversial post regarding the Twilight saga (and a record number of visits to Joyfully Home), I thought it would be nice to take a break from the seriousness that's characterized my blog so far this week. I got the perfect opportunity for such a break yesterday, when Gabrielle of Bramblewood Fashion presented me with a blog award! Thank you, Gabrielle. And a warm thank you to any other readers who have presented me with awards this past year --your thoughtfulness is much appreciated.

This award requires that I blog seven unknown things about me:
  1. I used to want to be an actress -terribly. Yet despite my interest in film, I always wanted to act onstage, and used to be obsessed with Tennessee Williams, Oscar Wilde, and George Bernard Shaw's major works. But even though I love to read Pygmalion --
  2. I despise My Fair Lady (and, while I'm at it Fiddler on a Roof). It bores me to tears. Once, when I shared this detail with a theater student, he glowered and said, "What kind of person hates My Fair Lady? What, do you hate puppies, baseball, and apple, pie, too?!"
  3. No, I don't hate puppies. Trey and I had a Doberman Pinscher and a German Shepherd growing up. We don't have any pets right now, but we're hoping to get another Doberman soon, and, when I get married, I'm hoping on talking my husband into a Great Dane.
  4. And, no, I don't hate apple pie. I adore it. It's my very favorite dessert. Of course, I adore many a dessert...
  5. Baseball? I can't say that I hate it, but I'm not quite the sports enthusiast I wish -for my future husband's sake -that I was. The only sport I'll sit down and watch is tennis, and that's probably because I took tennis lessons for several years.
  6. Despite the lessons, though, I'm afraid I'm shamefully lacking in hand-eye-coordination. I'm thinking of taking up pilates, a form of exercise I can do in my room alone, without anyone to laugh at my technique, or get knocked around by my long limbs.
  7. Speaking long limbs, I think I might still be growing. Right now, I'm around 5'9," (after having stretched my 5'8" measurement for the last year-and-a-half =) which is the height I've always wanted to be (and I'm 19, which is the age I always chose in my make-believe games, and has always been the year of my life when I expected "big things" to happen =). My dad is 6'3", my mama is 5'8", and Daddy grew until he was in his early twenties, so I'm curious to see when I'll stop growing.
I tag anyone who reads "Joyfully Home" --thank you very much for stopping by, and let me know if you decide to blog seven random things about yourself. Please have a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow with your loved ones, praising the Lord, who has given each us so very much to be grateful for. What are some of your Thanksgiving plans?
At the Baucham home, I'll be making my way into the kitchen again, donned in my June Cleaver apron and a sunny disposition, prepared with oldies tinkling in the background, and armed with a Food Network recipe in hopes of whipping up a dynamic apple cobbler. I'll be back later this week --if sous-cheffing and cobbler-making doesn't drive this perfectionist insane. What were those words again?

    Ah -- I remember now. =)

Well Jasmine, if I had a blog on which to put it (which I don't), you would certainly recieve The Blog of the Year reward.... the last two posts were absolutely great. 'What's a girl to do' was so thought provoking.... and the first person to comment, Lauren Bleser, had some wonderful insights to share. As I read her comments, I was thinking, "Wow; these are things that we girls who did grow up in Christian homes need to remember!" To see how she is making lemonade out of lemons in her circumstances reminded me that none of us live in 'perfect' homes, and perhaps sometimes we expect too much. There is always someone out there worse off than we, and the Lord has give us so much to be thankful for right where He has put us! (and yes, my life is far from perfect; there are many moments of depression and grumbling for me; so this was just what I needed to read!)

Thank you for all you said about Twilight.... all the comments were most interesting, and you did a fabulous job answering everybody. (I'm honestly not trying to flatter you; just stating facts) And please, please, don't forget to put up your post on the new Emma movie! I've been asked several times why I like the Gwyneth Paltrow version better, and while I can 'sort of' explain, I would love to see how you put it.

    You are so much fun!

    1. I love Fiddler on the Roof, but after the wedding scene, it does kind of drag on. 2. I used to do theatre as a teenager and joined a group doing Fiddler on the Roof...I got the role of Hodel..the 2nd oldest daugter. Unfortunately, the show got canceled due to a lack of men for the roles. 3. Instead, they did Cinderella and I got the title role, but quit 2 weeks before opening because the director kept changing the script and "Prince Charming" was the lighting and props guy who couldn't carry a tune, was kind of creepy and I was expected to actually kiss him. Everyone said they'd quit if I quit, but when I quit and walked out the door, no one was behind me. Oh well, I don't regret it. It was a train wreck. 4. The last show I ever did was "Working" which is a horrible show with a lot of swearing and adult themes. It was my first and only year in college and I was quite happily type-cast as the teacher and the housewife...with telemarketer thrown in. 5. After that, I pretty much quit the stage, except for a stint on my church's worship team....all pride aside, I used to have a really good soprano singing voice. 6. Sometimes I dream of going back, but really, it isn't worth the hype, hassle and stress. That talent-ship has sailed and I like focusing on my other gifts and interests which include 7. wanting to paint like Bob Ross.

    PS...my word verification is "blograt"!

oh,yes; I'm with you on My Fair Lady. I think the ending is terrible; did he want to marry her, or not?

But I must say that I love Fiddler on the Roof; I think it is one of my favorite musicals ever, and I would argue that it is one of the only musicals with a point. (I don't like Singing in the Rain, though, which I know to be a favorite of yours, so perhaps that is where different tastes for different types of musicals comes in)

I love "Fiddler". Truth is though, that I love it more as I grow older. It always reminds me of the danger of making religious traditions more important than the actual religion.
"My Fair Lady" I can take it or leave it. You do have to admit that the costumes are fabulous.

As a former theatre major you are in good company. I despise Fiddler on the Roof. The only good things about My Fair Lady are the music and Julie Andrews. I also despise the Sound of Music as well. Apparently I am cruel and heartless for that one. I love you blog!

Jasmine, my mom makes a killer-to-die-for apple pie, which she might be tempted to make for you if you will come with your dad next July to the Santa Rosa, CA homeschool conference. =)

Thanks again for sharing your heart with us! I can't tell you how much my sister and I appreciate your sound wisdom...and your buoyant personality =)

    In Christ,

Jasmine, my dear, you are not alone in hating "My Fair Lady" or "Fiddler on the Roof." I like the music in the former (but I canNOT stand Rex Harrison) and the latter does seem to drag some times.

HOwever, I never assumed that you hated dogs and apple pie. We have two precious beagles right now, and while sometimes I think I am allergic, I wouldn't get rid of them for the world.

Ah, yes, Food Network recipes....you got to love them. How I got on without watching that channel and getting countless ideas is beyond me. You'll do fine, I am sure, on that cobbler recipe.

Happy Thanksgiving, my friend. By the way, did you ever get that e-mail I sent?

Being as old as you are, I'd be very surprised if you kept growing. In fact, I'd be really surprised if you've grown much at all in the past 2-5 years. Your dad grew in his early 20s because...men are late bloomers. :)

    Grace Everest,

Thank you very much for your kind words! I, too, enjoyed reading Lauren's comment --she's a dear friend of mine, and such an encouragement to talk to.

You're right --most musicals are pretty plotless, but I have to admit that I do enjoy the merriness of films like "Singin' in the Rain." =D

    Kateri,

I *loved* reading your comment! I only acted on stage in two productions, and it's always an interesting time. ;-)

    Mrs. Rhonda,

You're definitely right about "My Fair Lady's" costumes --they're gorgeous!

    Mary,

Yes! Although I do enjoy The Sound of Music, I'm loving that someone's speaking up about not liking "Fiddler." Thank you for commenting. =)

    Careen,

I don't think I'll be going. =( But now I have another reason to wish that I were! Thank you for your sweet comment.

    Ella dear,

I did get your email! For some reason, I thought I'd responded to it, but I see now that I've only responded in my dreams. =/ It's always good to hear from you, in blog comments or email, and I think of you often.

    Food Network is so fun!

    Jenny,

I'd heard that most women don't grow much past their teen years, and that men are late bloomers. I have one friend whose 5'11" and in her early twenties, who grew a little late like me, which is why I wondered if I could be an exception.

I myself have only grown about three inches in the last 5 years, and it's been a steady incline --no spurts. I've only sprouted a half inch this past year. =) I'd be pretty happy being 5'9" -just so long as that's the number on my driver's license. =D

Jasmine! I thought I was the only one who wasn't thrilled with My Fair Lady!! Some of the songs are okay, but the ending is just terrible.........he should have married her!

Anyway........so glad you're happy with your height. Lots of women aren't. I'm 5'3" and perfectly content.

    Jasmine,
I also dislike My Fair Lady. I first saw it when I was younger and fell asleep half-way through. Recently I decided to try and watch it again since I now "appreciate Audrey Hepburn". I should have spared myself the three hours. :) Although I do like the "I Could Have Danced All Night" scene, the ending was horrible. And Henry Higgins was WAY too old for her.
And I'm with you on baseball. I recently tried to watch my first game at a friend's house, but I think I more annoyed them than helped because I kept forgetting which team was which (the uniforms all look alike!) and what order "top" and "bottom" of an inning go in. :(
Football isn't bad, though. I've watched the Superbowl a couple times and think I could live with a husband who watches an occasional game. I'm spoiled, though, since my Dad prefers NASA over NFL, and major news stories over Major League Baseball. :)

P.S. Maybe once I get a blog I'll post seven things about me. Be aware of an e-mail regarding the subject in about 3 years. :)

I don't really care for My Fair Lady, either. I do like some of the scenes, but think they could have done much better in others!

I ADORE Singing in the Rain, though! Daddy and I love watching that. I'm definitely a Gene Kelly fan. I just love to watch his movies; what a dancer and singer! :) I think he's better than Fred Astaire, although I like him, too. And, what I really admire about Fred Astaire, is that he refused to kiss the actresses that starred alongside him. I really appreciate that stance.

I've never seen Fiddler on the Roof (and after this post, may never will! lol).

Oh, I adore puppies; I'm such a dog person (I do like cats, though, too). I have a sweet cavalier king charles spaniel right now, and at one time had a golden retriever. I sure hope my future husband likes dogs!!

You should really try my great-grandma's apple pie; I have to say it's the absolute best ever (I'm not biased! haha). Her husband of 70 years jokes that the reason he never tires of it is because it never tastes exactly the same (she doesn't use a recipe). :) It really is so good!

Daddy is a major baseball fan. I really should watch more games with him than I do. We, as a family, have seen our local team play a few times and always enjoy it. I'm not as big a fan as Daddy is, but I have fun nonetheless (even if I don't understand everything!). He also likes football, and because his dad went to the University of Texas (the real UT, as Daddy calls it-words that will get you in major trouble up here! :) ), he likes to watch their games (you're not an A&M fan, are you? haha). Again, I should watch more with him. Their quarterback seems to be a great Christian. I like football ok, but can't stand it when someone gets injured (or when the coach works his players too hard; I have a thing about football coaches-especially HS ones!). I have a good friend from church who tore his knee cartilage this year during the killer football practices, so I have a hard time with the injuries.

I have no hand eye coordination, either, so the thought of playing tennis scares me. I would love to be able to play, but I'm sure I wouldn't be very good at it.

Let me know how Pilates goes if you decide to try it out! I've considered trying that myself.

That's amazing that you're still growing! Most women your age have stopped. My growth plates in my hips have already closed (I know this simply because I had hip surgery for slipped capital femoral epiphysis-there's something for you to research! :)-and if I wasn't done growing now-at least from the hip area-I would likely have to have surgery again. It's good to be content with your height- it's precisely the height God chose for you! Daddy is 6' and Mama's 5' 10"; if you go by the double your height at 2 thing, I was supposed to be 5' 10", too. I'm so thankful I'm not, though, as I like my height of 5' 7" and I would have likely had problems with my legs if I had grown much more.

Well, enough of my rambling on! :)

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Are you having family over? If so, I'll pray for great witnessing opportunities! :)

    God bless!

Love, love, love the new wallpaper! Too CUTE! ;-) I also ADORE puppies. I got my mixed-breed dog about 4 yrs. ago and she literally looked just like that lab pup in the "Cottonelle" t.p. commercials.

Hey, maybe next week we can have that "Emma" post you were talking 'bout. ;-)\

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Jasmine! I enjoyed your post! I saw you have 'The Mysterious Islands' movie button on your sidebar. Have you watched it? We just saw it premiere last night and really enjoyed it! If you have seen it, what did you think of the iguanas? =) God is certainly so creative!! :)

That's interesting about your height. Though there are always exceptions, I think that girls usually reach their full height at a younger age than boys do, and shorter people seem to reach their full height at a younger age than taller people do. For instance, when I was little I was always "the shrimp" - very petite - compared to the rest of my friends. I remember being amazed at how tall one 11 year old friend of mine was...and then a few years later I was taller than her (she's 5'3" and I'm 5'5"). I don't think I reached my full height (or what I assume is my full height) until just recently, and I'm 19 (and not unusually tall in the least). My 16 year old sister is at least 5'7", and of course my 15 year old brother is almost 6' (they shot up right past me! Crazy!). I think my mother is 5'5" almost 5'6" (I'm eye level but not sure if I'll ever really be taller than her) and my father is 6'1".

But we seem to grow really slow in my family (starting from my paternal grandmother, who took quite awhile to reach her full height, and we have a relative who grew a few inches after she turned 18).

Well, that's all for my rather pointless analysis on height at the moment (people wonder why I get so interested in subjects like this...haha). I used to love playing around with those height predictors on medical websites.

I greatly disliked the ending of My Fair Lady... what is she now, his housekeeper/mistress?? I agree with a previous commenter, He shoulda married her! ;D

Despite that, I do like the music, especially the iconic "I could have danced all night". :)

Anyway, for my purpose in commenting...
AHA! You changed the background! Goody! If you don't object, I'd LOVE to design a new header for you... I even have the elements for the scrapbook kit this background was designed from. :)

Wow, I never would've thought I'd find so many girls that don't like Fiddler! I guess it's because the group of girls I grew up with adored it, so we watched it all the time and acted out every song... =)

    7 Random Things About Me:

1)I have seen every single Fred & Ginger movie ever made, as well as most Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly movies

2)I never did theater, although I used to act in church plays, back in the days...

3)When I wanted to be a star on Broadway and live in NYC—before I finally visited the city and changed my mind –I’m suited to the country life :)

4)I’ve never sent a text message on a cell phone

5)Mostly because I’m extremely old fashioned and prefer receiving hand-written letters over e-mails

6)I’m also old fashioned in that my wildest dreams include someday dancing in the moonlight, listening to an old Billie Holiday record on a vintage turntable

7)Or any other oldschool jazzy singer, since my personal philosophy is that jazz is best listened to at nighttime—the day is for classical music or Motown

That was pretty fun! I guess I’ll just have to write a new one in three years for my future blog!
