Adopted for Life: The Follow-Up

"Good Housekeeping" Print
This week has been full of recommendations, but I have one more before the week is out, if that's okay with you all. ;-)

About a month ago, I posted a recommendation for a book I was starting, Adopted for Life. Since it's a little unorthodox to recommend a book one hasn't even read oneself yet, I wanted to do a follow-up review to let readers know that Russell Moore's Adopted for Life: The Priority of Adoption for Christian Families and Churches was everything I hoped it would be and more. It's a good read for anyone -whether you're thinking about adoption, have adopted in the past, are leery of the entire process, or have questions for families who have been through it already, this is a read I can honestly say that no member of the church should pass up. Some of my favorite topics covered were:
  • How to answer some of the rude questions one receives about "adopted" children or siblings (as Dr. Moore says, adopted is a pass-tense verb, not an adjective; and they're all ours, thank you).
  • Whether one should consider adoption before one has children of "one's own."
  • How to talk to a child who was adopted about the process that brought them to your home.
  • How to talk to others about considering adoption, or to ask good questions of families who have gone through the process.
  • How to approach the price of adoption itself.
  • How to encourage other families who have adopted.
The list goes on -and on -and on. With helpful anecdotes from his own life, Dr. Moore communicates what is sometimes a difficult message with humility (and a huge dose of humor). As the sister of four brothers who were adopted, I identified sharply with many of the things Dr. Moore shared, and was even able to rethink my own thought process or lingo regarding what I hope to be future adoptions for my own future family.

Beyond that, I got even more excited about having Dr. Moore visit our church's spring conference this year. He'll be speaking on the very subject of this book, and I'm looking forward to listening and learning. Grace Family Baptist is a church that is by no means unfamiliar with the adoption process (countless members have been through it, are going through it right now, or or praying about it as I type), and I'm hoping that our passion is infectious. ;-) I also hope that some of you are able to join us!

Read Adopted for Life. You won't be disappointed. You'll learn and you'll grow in ways you never suspected from reading a book that's "just adoption." Because adoption is about so much more than increasing your family size -it's about the gospel.

Oh yes! It's about so much more! Both the book (also about trusting God, feeling the Abba groan as we look around us, what our church relationships should really look like--you're right, the list goes on and on and on, smile) and adoption--such a beautiful picture of the gospel.

My husband just gave me this book for Christmas! I am only a few pages in, but have already recommended it to several others...glad to see that it is as good as I think it will be! :)

This is my first time commenting. I just recently found your blog, and have really been enjoying it over the last few weeks!

Great! This looks like a really interesting book and a good one to add to our library.

I'll have to ask you about another book later :)

My Mom read this book and loved it! It is on my list to read next. I am really looking forward to it. My family has adopted twice and hopefully more!

My family bought this book for Christmas and my mother is already reading it. Our family is doing an adoption right now and we are looking forward to see who the Lord will bless us with. If any one would like to follow our adoption blog here it is: www.safelytoarriveathome.blogspot.com

Yes, I agree! Adoption is not about family size. It is about the gospel. Praise the Lord!

Thank you for the recommendation Jasmine! That’s how we found out about the book. =)

Two years ago our family began an adoption journey, but apparently it was not God's plan for us then. We are still hopeful though, and would still love to adopt. We'll see what He has in store for us.

Thanks for recommending this wonderful resource!

I just got this book in the mail yesterday. I purchased it after seeing a book review for it in the Focus on the Families Citizen magazine. I'm even more excited to jump in and read it now that I've read your post!

Wow. This is so amazing!
Our family has been praying about adoption for over a year--we've gone through the home study and are now praying for God to send us the right child(ren). We got away from it for a while, but now we've actively gotten back into the process of praying and looking.
We've been talking about this a lot in the past few days--it's so amazing that I got on your blog and you "just happened" to recommend a book on adoption!
I guess the Holy Spirit is telling our family to read this book, lol...
